Style icons Doja Cat and Kylie Jenner are leading the GLASS purse trend

An all-glass handbag has become an unexpected summer staple after being spotted on the arms of high-profile celebrities ahead of its official release.

Parisian brand Coperni collaborated with mouth-blown glassware maker Heven to create a glass version of their iconic Swipe handbag.

Doja Cat, Kylie Jenner and Tinashe are among the stars leading the trend after they managed to nab the $2,800 accessory before it hit shelves.

On TikTok, more than 5 million people have seen #GlassBag, with many admitting the IT item has been on their wishlist since its debut at the Coperni Womenswear Fall/Winter 2022-2023 Paris Fashion Week show.

They don’t seem put off by the risk of the handbag breaking if it slips through your fingers while reaching for your bank card, although the blown glass it’s made from is extra thick to provide some level of protection against cracks easily.

Breanna Box and Peter Dupont launched Brooklyn-based Heven in late 2020 after beginning glassblowing during the pandemic, with their collection of playful home glassware gaining cult status.

The pair said Coperni’s Sebastien Meyer sent them a DM to discuss the collaboration, before teaming up with Brooklyn Glass makers and Josh Raiff to make their dream of a glass Swipe bag a reality.

Peter told ID that they had to use an air hose instead of blowing with their mouths because the material used to make the bag was so thick.

“I always struggle with this ‘art’ thing, in terms of what we do. For me, art is something that has no function. You can’t live in it, you can’t eat it; it’s just there and it has an aesthetic purpose.

“Our pieces always have functionality and that’s one of the philosophies behind what we do with Heven. This bag is functional: you can put your phone, your wallet in it,” said Peter.

He added that Heven had plans for more glass bags and was “excited” to create something that was completely his own aesthetic after focusing on adapting to Coperni’s look.

Having already donned a glass handbag during New York Fashion Week in 2018, it’s no surprise that Gigi Hadid was chosen to model Coperni’s glass bag on their runway.

Doja Cat stunned at the 2022 Grammy Awards by pairing her light blue Atelier Versace dress with a Coperni glass Swipe handbag and attaching a JBL speaker for an on-trend touch.

American singer Tinashe also attended the annual music event wearing a glass Swipe handbag but paired with a maxi dress.

Kylie Jenner was spotted holding a clear version of the accessory, paired with a white suit as she joined her sisters in Malibu for a Hulu press day.

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian also snagged a Coperni handbag at Coachella to complete her gray coordinated look.

Speaking about the trend, fashion stylist Ellis Ranson told FEMAIL: “We can finally see what’s in a celebrity’s bag with the new ‘it bag,’ no matter how wacky.”

‘As Kylie says “I’ve got nothing to hide and everything to promote”, not only is it the latest hot accessory, it’s perfect for that product placement…but how awesome is this new bag? it portable and why is it the latest hit?

“It’s the modern Cinderella slipper and clearly everyone makes sure it goes with all their looks. As a stylist, sometimes a bag can really enhance or spoil a look, especially on the red carpet, but I love this effortless style, I think it completely elevates your entire outfit.

‘What makes it so trendy right now is that the Y2Ks are such a hit, of course the latest bag will be inspired by sliding the iPhone to unlock it and will be as unwearable as the mini micro skirt and low rise jeans…but all in the name of fashion, we’ll try anything.

Alexis Knox from London, a celebrity fashion designer for over 15 years, added: “For the 2022 Grammys, quirky style icon Doja cat rocked a futuristic glass bag by Corperni Paris. Literally Glass in collaboration with the Hevesy glass factory.

“So do we really want people to see the mess we carry in our bag?”

“Well for those who live their life through the lens – yes! It’s the perfect opportunity to show what we want the world to know about us…marketing extraordinaire Kylie Jenner sported one – only managing to carry the weight of one of her infamous kits for the lips in its fragile structure… a perfect product placement.

‘If the $2,700 price tag seems a bit high for your goofiness, try the trend with one of the many high street pvu clear backpacks – perfect for festival season.

“Or for a night out, a 00s-style clear plastic clutch that will elevate any outfit…just make sure you don’t carry any dirty tissues.”

Social media users have been split over the trend, with many saying they would do “anything” to get a Coperni glass bag, while others say it’s not functional.

One person wrote: ‘Ever since I saw Doja Cat and Tinashe rock them at the Grammy’s these little glass bags have lived rent free in my mind. I want’

“I would do anything to get another Coperni glass bag,” said another.

A third commented: “A glass purse? I don’t know but it’s kinda cute
