New nonprofit has brand new bag for young people in need

When children are taken from their homes and placed in foster care, it is a very stressful, frightening and often confusing time for them. It’s My Very Own – Bags Of Love seeks to reduce that stress and fear by giving them a bag of personal items, books and toys appropriate for their age, as well as a handmade quilt, to let them know that someone cares about their age.

Social workers have seen first-hand the difference these bags make when placing children in foster homes. The gift of a love bag helps calm children’s spirits, giving them something positive to focus on during the difficult transition.

“T’s My Very Own – Bags of Love helps children and youth in Dawson Creek and surrounding areas who are in foster care feel comforted and loved in times of need.

The group is a faith-based, voluntary organization that works with the Ministry of Children and Family Development to help children who are removed from their homes and placed in foster care.

The Dawson Creek Chapter was started by Caitlin Attfield and Viktoria Puge after hearing about the Prince George branch of It’s My Very Own – Bags of Love.

“We can accept donations of new items with tags and we can issue charitable receipts for cash donations over $ 5 at the end of the tax year,” Attfield said.

“We are always on the lookout for fabrics for making quilts, small to medium sized toys, coloring books, sketch pads and journals, pens, pencils, pencils, grooming items. personal, socks, diapers and wipes, stickers, activities and crafts, pajamas for children and adolescents. , and knitted hats, socks, slippers or mittens. Each bag is designed to provide comfort during a stressful time, ”adds Attfield.

“We are very grateful for the support and donations we have already received from various community members and businesses. Puge said.

Attfield and Puge both said some companies are already helping, including the Dawson Creek Public Library, KPAC, ARC Resources Ltd, Tiger Office Plus, Generation Creations, Flavors 8 and Peace Country Dental.
