Men’s tennis dominates Arkansas in Norman

22 Oklahoma

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s No. 22 men’s tennis team beat Arkansas, which received votes in the latest ITA poll, 5-2 at Headington Family Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Sooners (8-1) collected the singles point and four singles wins, including two ranked wins, to extend their unbeaten run at home.

“Today was great”, the head coach Nick Crowell noted. “We had a lot of battles with Arkansas. They’re a great team that had a great fall, so our guys did a great job preparing all week for this game. They came out and performed, and that’s what we wanted them to do.”

OU started the day strong, taking the doubles point after wins on courts one and three. Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard finished the game first with a 6-3 win over Alex Reco and Nico Rousset on the front row. On court two, Marc Mandlik and Baptist Anselmo fought back, but ultimately fell to No. 36 Adrien Burdet and Melvin Manuel, 6-4. The action took place on court three with Mason Beler and Nathan Han clinching the point at 6-4 against Hunter Harrison and Jacob Sweeney of Arkansas.

“I think Welsh and Alex did a great job coming back from some adversity, down 3-1 in doubles No. 1, and to be first in doubles is always huge,” Crowell said.

No. 54 Jordan Hasson struck first in the singles side of the competition, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oscar Pinto Sansano on court five. Arkansas entered the board after Manuel took the field six 6-2, 6-3 against Justin Schlageter.

Martinez picked up a big win over No. 25 Bucan on court two. Martinez’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Bucan marked his second straight win this season.

“Alex [Martinez] really dominated with his forehand and was playing very heavy, disciplined tennis,” Crowell said. “It was one of the most disciplined games I’ve seen him play. He played very smart and used his head. I was proud of the way he closed this game in straight sets because Bucan is a great player and we knew it would be tough.”

No. 49 Mandlik won the match for OU with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court four over Burdet.

The remaining courts played out with Beiler and Anselmo leading their matches to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set. No. 31 Beiler won the upper ground 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 [11-9] against No. 102 Alex Reco. Anselmo lost their match 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 [11-9] against Rousset on court three.

The Sooners will host Alabama and Drake at the Headington Family Tennis Center on February 11 and 13, respectively. Friday’s game against Alabama is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Sunday’s action against Drake is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. Games are open to the public and admission is free. Free pizzas will be available for the first 50 fans at both matches.
