Jamie Carragher has mocked Roy Keane after Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough on Friday night.

United lost 8-7 on penalties after a frustrating 120 minutes that ended 1-1 against the Championship side at Old Trafford.

Anthony Elanga was the only player to miss his kick, exploding over the bar in a sudden death to hand Boro a famous victory in the fourth round of the competition.

United really should have been out of sight in the first half but only took a 1-0 lead thanks to Jadon Sancho’s clever finishing.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the penalty spot after Paul Pogba fell, while Sancho hit the bar with a lob and Bruno Fernandes fended off a free header.

The opposing side controversially equalized when Duncan Watmore put on Matt Crooks, despite the ball hitting his hand.

Fernandes hit the post with a huge chance to win it, allowing Boro to triumph on penalties – and Carragher to wind up Keane once more.

After the result was confirmed, the former Liverpool defender took to Twitter to remind his followers of a row he had with Keane in November.

“Roy Keane told me Man Utd signed Ronaldo to win the #FACup,” Carragher tweeted .

Carragher was referring to a heated debate he had with Keane in the Sky Sports studio after United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

In it, Carragher questioned why United signed Ronaldo, with Keane claiming it was to try and win cup competitions, not the Premier League title.

Here is an excerpt from their argument at the time.

“He’s a phenomenon in terms of goalscoring,” said Carragher. “But I mentioned it midweek. PSG signed Messi and United signed Ronaldo. Are United closer to the title? No. Are PSG closer to the Champions League with Messi? No .”

Keane replied: “Ronaldo was never going to bring United back to winning titles.”

“So what was the point of signing him then?!” Carragher fired back. “He is 37 years old!

“He didn’t come back to win the league,” Keane said.

Carragher: “Then why did he come back?! Why is he here then?”

Keane: “When you won the FA Cup, weren’t you abuzz with it? United are a cup team right now.”

Carragher: “You said Ronaldo didn’t come to win the League, why is he here?”

“For the mugs,” added Keane.

Carragher: ‘Is this where Man United are now?’

“Absolutely,” Keane said.

Carragher: “So you’re happy with that?”

“I’m not, but that’s where they are as a club,” Keane concluded. “Look at the team, look at the league, look at the last two or three years, they won’t win the league for two or three years.”
