Genesis Birth Services Provides Accessible Family Planning | News, Sports, Jobs
Founded by Gerria Coffee, Genesis Birth Services provides doula support, childbirth education, and breastfeeding support to women who are pregnant, considering, or having given birth.
Because she offers doula services, Coffee said she was able to reach families very early in their pregnancy.
“There are times when I am able, because they know me, to talk to them before, when they are planning to become pregnant” she said.
Connecting with someone early in their pregnancy allows them to keep those conversations going, addressing concerns that pregnant women and new mothers might have.
“So it just becomes available … answer all questions, spend time understanding the psychosocial implications of what they are going through”, Coffee says.
She will go to the hospital with her clients and will also visit them at home if they ask.
For breastfeeding support, Genesis recently launched the Lactation Warm line, 1-833-9-Genesis, which people can call anytime of the day. Coffee said if no one answers just leave your contact details and someone will get back to you immediately to answer your questions.
Coffee said offering the toll-free helpline was part of “Make that access available… think of all the ways to make support equitable at every stage of pregnancy, because someone may have questions at 15 months. “
In accordance with their mission, Genesis Birth Service seeks “Provide equitable support and education to families who are often underserved and underrepresented during pregnancy and childbirth”.
One of the main goals of Genesis is to provide “Unbiased, culturally appropriate and evidence-based education and support” for families of various origins.
A professional lactation specialist and full-spectrum doula, or birth coach, Coffee has an engineering background. Her own postpartum experience prompted her to find ways to help other women.
“The disparities and challenges I faced as a new mother are the driving force behind what opened my eyes to everything I do now” Coffee says.
“I have a background in technology, engineering and design. When I became a mother, I was the mother who hadn’t seen breastfeeding, maybe more than once. There was no conversation about breastfeeding and I was pregnant with twins ”, she added.
At Genesis, clients can make an appointment for a pregnancy test and receive family planning support. They will also have access to pregnancy and childbirth doula services as well as pregnancy and infant loss support. Other services include childbirth education classes and breastfeeding and breastfeeding support.
Over the summer, Coffee hosted a virtual seminar on the issue of black breastfeeding to raise awareness of the disparities that exist between black and white women in the initiation and duration of breastfeeding. .
