Coastal Carolina Fair returns Thursday with a new layout

LADSON, SC (WCBD) – The Coastal Carolina Fair returns to the Lowcountry. Doors will open to the public at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 27.

Visitors can expect a brand new layout and a unique experience.

“It was time for a change,” said Gasper Marino, a member of the fair’s security committee. “We had a completely different show than everyone is used to seeing.”

The new layout matches this year’s fair slogan ‘New in 22’. The fair will feature over 60 rides and 100 food vendors as well as live entertainment, a beer garden, games and more.

Safety is the number one priority for trade show organizers and nothing is overlooked.

In addition to state-required ride inspections, third-party safety inspectors have been hired to ensure that no rides are operational without being thoroughly checked each day before the doors open.

Inspectors have been on the ground for a week already while the rides are being built. A step-by-step checklist is closely followed.

They also inspect fairgrounds and buildings.

As for the danger from outside the gates, the fair’s safety committee has that covered as well.

“We actually have bag checks. We are going to have a transparent bag policy this year as well as metal detectors. The best way to put it, I have 3 young children and there isn’t a place here I wouldn’t take them,” Marino said.

According to the fair’s website, the clear bag policy affects the type and size of bags allowed on the grounds – not the items (keys, makeup, combs, smartphones, wallets and credit cards) you would normally bring to a fair. event. Customers can still carry these items in their pockets. Guests will also be permitted to openly wear a blanket or jacket in the fairgrounds, although they will be subject to a search. For the quickest way to enter the fairgrounds, we strongly advise guests not to bring any type of bag, but if you must, here are the specific types of bags that will be allowed:

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags that do not exceed 12″ x 6″ x12″
  • One-gallon plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
  • Small pouches, with or without a handle or shoulder strap, not exceeding 4.5″x6.5″ – subject to research
  • Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection.
  • Changing bags for babies and toddlers. The child must be present. One bag per child.

The Coastal Carolina Fair is the Lowcountry’s largest fundraiser for area nonprofits.

Since 2000, approximately $11 million has been donated to non-profit organizations in the region.

“We are primarily looking for people who work in the prevention of child abuse, which is our national project, and also to support our programs which are part of the national exchange club which are family, community and Americanism” said Gary Leonard, a media and public relations committee member with the fair. “In a year where we had a record year for attendance, we donated over $800,000 to our community.”

It is also the largest volunteer-based fair in the United States. Members of the Exchange Club of Charleston collectively work 14,000 hours throughout the fair as well as in the months leading up to it.
