SUMMARY: Men’s cross country takes victory at Challenge Division II in Kutztown
The University of Shippensburg’s men’s cross-country team returned to action on Saturday victorious, posting a team first place finish at the Division II Challenge in Kutztown.
The Raiders saw their five scoring runners cross the finish line between fourth and 14th and were only 48 seconds apart. SU won with 43 points, while Lock Haven was second with 76 points. Bloomsburg (115 points) was third and host Kutztown (118 points) fourth.
Saturday marked the Raiders’ first 6km cross country race since the 2019 NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships on November 9, 2019, making it the longest collegiate cross country race. to date for several SU riders.
Among them was Hayden Hunt who served as a ringleader for Raider. Hunt was fourth with a time of 26:48. Ian sherlock impressed with a seventh place time of 27:11; classmate Aiden Gonder was one place and three seconds behind in the eighth.
Junior Kevin Wagner produced his second breakthrough performance as a Raider, crossing the finish line with an impressive 10th place time of 27:28. This is the second time that Wagner has been the team’s No.4 runner, a feat he already achieved during the 2019 Paul Short Run.
Senior Nate kaplon completed the Raider’s scorers with a strong 8k run of 27:37, which resulted in 14th place.
Juniors Alexander Ermold and Drew dailey and first year student Mitchell brett each finished in the top 30. Ermold was 24th in 28:02 and Dailey 26th in 28:07. Brett, a Lenhartsville native competing just 15 minutes from his hometown, was 28th in 28:07.
It was the first time Shippensburg had raced at Kutztown since 2017, and the race was an opportunity for the Raiders to preview the course that will host the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships next month.
Shippensburg is back in action next Saturday at Big Spring High School in Newville for the Dickinson Long / Short Invitational.
